Prometheus

When the previews started, I really wanted to see it.  Space! Alien! Ridley Scott! Charlize Theron! How could I go wrong?

Then the reviews started coming in. Basically, dreck. Huh.  Still kind of wanted to see it, but then again, kind of not.

Fast forward to Oscar nominations. Nominated for Visual Effects. Being an Academy Awards Geek (Oscar Night is my favorite holiday), this put it squarely into the "must see by February 24" category. I get caught in this jam every year with this category - it always has movies I love, and one or two like this one.  The other nominees this year are:

  • The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Eagerly saw it at IMAX, mostly enjoyed it but not as much as I expected. Loved, loved, loved the effects while he was wearing the ring, however.
  • Life of Pi - Haven't seen it, Julie doesn't want to see it. Will need to do a solo movie outing.
  • Marvel's The Avengers - Couldn't wait to see it, saw it, loved it. Lots of cool effects, both tech and superhero related
  • Snow White and the Huntsman - Really liked this one. Again, Charlize Theron. Plus Kristen Stewart. And Chris Hemsworth. Lots of nominee crossover in this category. Amazing effects with all of the magical goings-on.
So, starting Prometheus while I await the start of the inauguration (another geek subject).  Updates later.

New Additions

We've been fur-free for a couple of years now, but we've now returned to the world of pet owners. Meet Ziggy Stardust and Starbuck, a pair of siblings that are coming to us from Maine. I'm up for the weekend, and I picked them up from their foster mommy. We'll be returning home tomorrow.

Weekend Movies

Using our AMC Stubs rewards card, I've secured tickets for:

I'm sure I'll have a random moment microcast out of this.  In the meantime, we're going to finish up the Buffy S5 episode, "The Body," and also finish up "New Year's Eve."  With blueberry pancakes. Or eggs with asparagus.

Podcast - Runkeeper, Interrupted

I'm adding an audio element via podcasts. Let's see if it holds my interest for any length of time.

Episode 1 - Runkeeper, Interrupted - In which my GPS-enhanced workout has technical difficulties.

Coming Soon - Mists of Pandaria

Blizzard announced it, and I pre-ordered it.  I will be playing Mists of Pandaria on the day of release.  Now the question is, will I schedule a day off for release day?  When Cataclysm released at 3:00 am eastern, I was online with the masses and played through the day.  I think I must do this again.

Ustream Fun and Frolic

I play World of Warcraft, and I have a couple of WoW podcasts in my iTunes subscriptions.  My fave is Ctrl-Alt-WoW, "the podcast for those of us who love World of Warcraft, and love making many alts."  This morning I got up at 6:00 am on a Sunday so I could join the chat room on their Ustream channel. Very cool.  They broadcast the audio live each week, and you get to hear the whole process, including when they are between recordings.  We can comment in the chat room, and they include some of that info in the podcast as they go along.  The experience was so much better than just listening to the finished podcast once they've cleaned it up and posted it on iTunes.

I've sent in a couple of emails in the past, but this week I stepped up and tackled GarageBand so I could send an audio submission.  Took a couple of hours Friday night, but I figured out the basics and managed to piece together a few minutes' worth. Extra fun getting immediate feedback in the chat room when they played it today.

If you're looking for a hard-core Wow podcast that will get you to the top stats of every raid you're in, this probably isn't the podcast for you (although they do have some good info of that sort).  But if you just enjoy playing and like the idea of a fun group of players who support each other and have fun, this is the one for you.  Plus, every episode does have great tips on life in Azeroth.

If you send in an email or audio submission for the podcast, you can also join their guild, Clan of Darkness, on the horde side of the Earthen Ring realm.  Fun guild, I recommend.
